Simply snap your food and that is it

With FoodVis, you do not have to type every food's name you ate, all you need to do is take a photo of your food. Foodvis will return nutrition information of your food by analyzing the snapshot.

Initial Thought

Tracking your diet is not easy, on current diet tracking apps, users need to type each kind of food manually to record their diet. Is there a better way to do so?

I worked with three colleagues to try to find the answer with our research and design.

User Research

Before we conducted traditional user interviews, we decided to get some insight into what our target users are from social media analytics. This quantitative approach served as the source of our broad demographic information about our target users.

In addition to social media analytics, I also designed a 3-week design ethnography study that invites a group of users to share their diet details to further understand my target users.

User Data from Social Media

We first looked into social media and tried to find out demographic information about my target users - people who care about diet tracking

User Data from Ethnography Study

In addition to user data from social media, I also designed a design ethnography study that invites random people to share their diet details on our file sharing system in a period of 3 weeks.

We recruited 21 participants and got complete diet information within 3 weeks from 14 of them.

Findings

Demographic Information

Among those who spend time recording their diet, female users aging from 18-35 took up around 70%.

wifi

How They Track Diet

Over half of all participants of the ethnography study chose to record their diet by taking a photo of what they ate

wifi

Typical Content

Among three options given, 82% of participants chose to track their diet by snapping their food only

Interview

In order to understand problems people faced when they record their diet, we conducted several user interviews.

Dylan mentioned that traditional diet tracking apps were not user-friendly enough because those apps asked them to type food's names manually when tracking diet.

"It was like looking up words in a dictionary, which was boring."

Our user Dylan is going to start his diet plan!

wifi

Dylan wants to use a diet tracking app to help him track his diet.

wifi

Dylan finds out that he needs to type name of every kind of food he had.

wifi

He wants to input "Wild Rice" for rice he just ate, but nothing returns. He realizes he has to use another name for wild rice.

wifi

However, he tries several names for wild rice before he finally gets the result with the correct term "Basamati"!

wifi

He wonders, does he have to figure out the exact name of the food every time he tracks his diet? He feels it too complicated and not intuitive.

wifi

Now he wishes there is a diet tracking app that can make diet tracking easier and has social media feature at the same time!

Current Diet Tracking Apps

Based on our interviewees' thoughts, I downloaded three most popular food tracking apps and used them for a week as a new user. Here I summarized my experience of using them as a user:
